Romance of Europe — Birarria

Venice has fascinated the world for years. On my first visit there, I looked for the perfect scene to convey her beauty, charm and romance. I think I may have found it - and I now offer it to you.

As with each of my paintings, Birraria too has only certain features that actually exist. The rest is imagined. Here, it was the awning over the restaurant which attracted my attention. However, it was necessary to create the appropriate environment for this corner get-away. So I set it by a canal where the deep, darkened water could reflect everything that stood above its mirrored surface.

Carved into the wall between hanging potted flowers, is a cross. And directly above the canal, distant steeples of a church stand in formation, reminding us that Christ is central to our daily lives. Along the walls which are erected beside the canal, sunlight casts a golden glow. That same hue is reflected in the translucent waters beneath, all the while hinting at the brightness of God's love which has permeated the darkness for the sake of a sinful world.

Just the tall gondola can be seen, a built-in indicator of the potential adventure to be found in all three directions from the restaurant. Though a cat sits watching th birds feed on whatever they can scavenge from the crumbs scattered on the stairs, there are no people in this scene. This is a space especially reserved for you.

I hope you will step in and enjoy it.
