There are at least two ways to live our lives:
On the one hand, it is possible to live behind a facade, hiding who we really are, guardedly allowing only a few of our imperfections to be revealed before a watching world. Life is lived behind a protective shell, and our communication with others is hampered by a fear of rejection, of hurt, or of being found out. We cannot enjoy the openness and freedom which comes from an honest acceptance of who we are, or from a courageous willingness to acknowldge our sin and seek God's help. This less-than-honest way of living leaves us weak and devoid of moral strength when faced with the normal spiritual challenges confronting us. Often, our attempts at communication with others, but especially with God, seem reminiscent of dropping a letter in a post box, where it may simply fall to the bottom and remain both unnoticed and unread.
On the other hand, we can demonstrate a willingness to be open and honest, not trying to hide behind a facade, but allowing others to see and know us for who we are. In this case, we live our lives as an open book before the world and God. Our confidence is not in ourselves, but in God's love and acceptance of us, because He has promised His grace to those who come humbly, in repentance, seeking His forgiveness. No longer ashamed of who we may have been or may have become, our communication becomes natural and uninhibited, both with those around us, and with God Himself. It is as if we had the kind of direct line with our friends and with God, that we might expect to find if calling from a telephone booth.
As a direct result of living without the encumbrances of uncertainty and timidity, a new thing will begin to happen. Healthy, prolific growth will be evidenced in our lives, and we will stand boldly for Christ in the world. And in case you may be tempted to fear this new approach to living your life as a Christian, listen again to the encouraging words of Paul to Timothy, his son in the faith: "For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline" (2 Timothy 1:7).
Remember, "The One (God) who calls you is faithful and He will do it" (1 Thessaloninas 5:24).
