Romance of Europe — Rue de la Piccola

This cobbled street, located along the French Riviera near Nice, offers silent testimony to centuries of colorful history and I have set out to capture its charm on canvas.

While the wall to the right did not exist and the wall to the left was basic and plain without balconies, restaurants, wrought-iron railings or features of interest, this street captured my imagination. I knew that if it were romanticised by the addition of some windows, a few pots with flowers, a restaurant, some signs and lanterns, it could emerge triumphantly from the ordinary.

Piccola street itself is a depiction of life. The uneveness of the cobbled surface suggests the up and down nature of circumstances which we encounter on our journey. Heavy shadows remind us of the dark times which can fall across our path. A lone flower, half-lit by the sun, illuminates on the roadway as if to demonstrate God-given joy in the midst of trial.

Perched in top of the tiled roof at the end of the street is a cross. Below it, the doors to the streetside church remain open to the passer-by. That strong light which casts its healing rays upon this scene symbolizes the light of God's love which has come into the world through His Son's death and resurrection. This is our faith - evident in the midst of everyday life.

While the birds enjoy a feast of crumbs in the sun-lit street, inside the restaurant a table is set as if awaiting your arrival. This is a space reserved for you and perhaps another.

I hope you will step inside and enjoy it.
